Lily’s 4th Birthday
Saturday morning we headed out to PA to visit John and Jaime and their family to celebrate Lily’s fourth birthday! The drive down was rather nice. I played the audiobook of the first couple chapters of The Audacity of Hope (which is awesome, but I’ll talk about that later…), so the drive down was pretty nice.
We got there a little early so we helped set up. I got to fill the chip bowls. Oh what fun. They had the slip-n-slide set up on the hill in their backyard and lots of fun inflatable water toys for the kids. John made some AWESOME (virgin) piƱa-coladas with strawberries and blackberries. There were tons of yummy snacks (goodbye diet… for one day) and then when Katie and Clayton and the other guests showed up it, it just got to be totally awesome. (Click on an image to make it bigger, and please forgive the wonky layout of this gallery… I’m still trying to figure it out.)
The water toys were a hit, but Buster just liked throwing dirt in his hair. He didn’t like the water at all and I think I traumatized him a bit when I threw him down the Slip-n-Slide. I’m sorry, son. I hope you don’t grow up with an irrational fear of toys from Wham-o.
It was so hot and humid, I just had to throw a swimsuit on and join the kids. That’s when things got out of control. The other dads at the party joined in on sliding, squirting water guns, throwing frisbees, etc. and it was loads of fun.
Then Jaime brought out her show-stopping mermaid birthday cake and I couldn’t help but keep singing Flight of the Conchords’ “Mermaid” see for yourself:
After the cake, I was super gross, covered in mud and grass, and Buster wasn’t faring much better. He was all sticky from the sunscreen and having not touched the water (voluntarily), he was covered in mulch, grass, dirt and chocolate frosting. So we went up and took a shower. It was amazing. I never felt so glad to be clean (and to be quite frank, I had never been so shocked to scoop handfulls of grass out of my butt).
After we were all clean, Lily opened her presents. We got sweet revenge on John by giving her a little flute recorder thing and a DOODLEBOPS coloring book! hahaha… But we gave her a real present too…
At dusk, Clayton and I took the all kids out to catch fireflies in a jar. It was really fun. I think we got about 7 or so (and accidentally killed about that many) before we ceremoniously let them all go. Later, Buster and I chased a wild rabbit around the backyard. SO COOL.
Later that night, John, Tyler and I went out to and saw The Incredible Hulk, which was pretty neat. We spent the night and drove back home this morning and spent the day recovering… Quite a fun weekend if you ask me.

So, I love that you threw Buster down the slide! The look on his face is awesome! And, Marylynn is scooping ice-cream, not cutting cake! I love that there’s 3 tubs of icecream! Such a Barnum party! Love the pictures!

Sarah, you know, you’re right about the ice cream. I’ll rectify the situation immediately. Those employees responsible for this unfortunate mishap have been subsequently released from our staff.
–Thanks, The Management.

Awesome post Tyler! Whoever planned that party must be sooo very cool! Oh wait… it was me!!
I must admit though… that part about the handfuls of grass coming from places where the sun don’t shine is a little disturbing. I will have to monitor more closely the things that go on in our bathroom! Then again… maybe it’s better I live in ignorance, huh.
Thanks so much for coming down and celebrating with us!
ps. Lily can’t seem to find her “flute”. Hmmmmmmmm.
