Virgin Mobile Festival 08 Report!
This past weekend, I had the pleasure of going to the Virgin Mobile Festival down in Baltimore. The Virgin Mobile Festival (or V-Fest as the kids say) is a 2-day rock festival that my company puts on every year that is rather awesome. Sure it’s no Coachella, but for my money’s worth, it’s definitely high on the awesome meter.
Marylynn didn’t want to go, so i offered her ticket to Billy Watkins, a 19-year old fellow music geek in my ward. We drove down to Baltimore together and had a total blast. i took a TON of pictures, and I whittled them down to the best 100. I then uploaded them to my new Flickr account (which is also awesome by the way). Prepare yourself for a butt-load of photos. You can click on them to view a larger size and/or comment on the individual pic! Flickr is so cool!!
We drove down Friday afternoon and decided to stay at the first cheap motel we could find in the area. We found a little place called The Towson East on Joppa Road (yes, like the Ween song!) about 10 minutes North of the festival. This was one of the sketchiest motels I have ever seen. At the front desk, behind the bulletproof glass, there was a giant neon sign that read “TRY ONE OF OUR HOT TUB ROOMS”. As much as Billy was pushing for one, I thought it would be wiser to save some money. Eeew.
So after we paid for 3 nights we checked out the room. it was gross and ridiculously unpresentable. So I called up a co-worker and found out that there was a Pre-Party in Baltimore. So we went to that. There were a lot of Co-workers there and awesome crab dip that I still dream about. Billy hit the dance floor by himself several times. He was totally fearless and awesome. I LOL’ed much.
DAY ONE
Saturday morning we wound up driving through downtown Baltimore on the way to the show (long, pointless story behind that), and found ourselves in the middle of a comic book / anime convention. there were kids in costumes everywhere on the street. It was hilarious, but none of my pictures turned out.

We drove past a giant cruise ship. Cool!

This is what my beard looks like travelling at 70mph through Baltimore.

We got there very early and it was a beautiful day. The grass was green and Billy was feeling optimistic.

This was the Playstation truck. We hit it up for a quick round of Rock Band or Singstar frequently.

The calm before the storm. My buddy Nick designed these scrims. They look great!!

Cat Power took the stage first. She was awesome.

She didn’t seem to be bothered. Her voice was very mellow and soothing. It was a great way to start out the day.

Some singer named KT Tunstall played next on the South Stage. This is her as seen through the Jumbotron.

There was a big wall they let everyone paint. Someone painted Plex! Now who would go and do a thing like that?

Duffy was up next on the North Stage. She was adorable. I only caught one song and I wish I could have stayed for her whole set, but it was time for a bit more testosterone.
GOGOL BORDELLO!! Was next. They totally KILLED it. They’re my favorite gypsy punk band ever.

GGB on the Jumbotron. This guy was in “Everything Is Illuminated”. He’s hilarious.

Their accordian player rocking out.

Their percussionist broke out halfway through and sang in Spanish. One of the funnest live shows I’ve ever seen. I’ll have to catch them again in a smaller venue for sure.

The Swell Season were up next. They were featured in the indie romantic drama, “Once”, which was awesome. They were very mellow and I loved them.

Representing YGG in the VIP tent, LOL.

Then we went and caught DJ Dan and DJ Whoopi Goldberg (??) in the dance tent. I learned to love the dance tent this weekend. There was a lot of incredible DJs in there. Way fun.

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings tearing it up.

Pure soul and 70’s funk served up hot.

One of the many cool installations they had there on the grounds. This was the “Green Spot” that had something to do with the environment… or something.

Just a reference at how enormous the stages were. The crowd was starting to get really big too by this time.

So a mosh pit broke out. Moshing to Bloc Party? umm… okay. See if you can find Billy in this picture!

Then we went back into the tent to make more goofy faces at the bands.
Soulwax totally ripped!!

The dance tent schedule was 45 minutes late. I’m so glad it was. These guys were incredible.

The Silver Beats went on before Chuck Berry. They were a Japanese Beatles Tribute band. I guess it was a novel idea, but I felt kinda cheated here.
Chuck Berry came on and it was kinda sad. He’s pushing 81 years old and it kinda felt like everyone was being nice to crazy old grandpa. He didn’t play very well and I could see his Guitar Hero meter dropping in my mind. I got a video of him playing Johnny B. Bad.

Wilco on the North Stage. Anyone who likes Wilco will tell you they’re really good. I don’t really like Wilco.

Back in the dance tent. Like waaaay trippy, man.

I didn’t catch much of The Foo Fighters, but of what I did see, 80% of it was a drum solo. I wasn’t too interested.

Underworld headlined the dance tent that night. They were kinda blurry.

They got themselves some inflatable columns!

I got tired and a little bored so I left Billy at Underworld and went to take a picture of Jack Johnson from the VIP tent. Man, that guy pissed me off so bad.
DAY TWO

Sunday morning was a beautiful!! I tried hard not to feel guilty about breaking the sabbath. oops.

Billy and I were just aching with anticipation to see the contest winners, Hollywood Undead kick it off.

It was their first show (seriously) and they were laughably bad. Didn’t the Kottonmouth Kings run this schtick into the ground ten years ago? Retardosaur.

Black Rebel Motocycle Club was next.

Who’s that? Oh! it’s Marc D, my boss and his family in the rafters watching The Go! Team!!

One of my most anticipated bands of the weekend, The Go! Team. They tore it up. I loved them so much, but I had to split after three songs in order to catch…

They opened the dance tent and it was PACKED. The crowd went wild.

Montreal’s Chromeo are billed as “the first ever successful Jewish / Arab collaboration in the history of time”.

They play sexy 80’s dance grooves with “anti-intellectual” lyrics. I love them dearly.

Dave 1 is studying to be a professor of French Literature. Seriously.

Leggy keyboard stands are AWESOME.

P-Thugg rocking the neck beard.

Meanwhile Andrew Bird was playing on the South Stage. He used to play with the Squirrel Nut Zippers back in the day, but plays more indie-ish stuff now.

He had a phonograph and a spinning whirly thing that made cool sounds. His music was beautiful and complex. It quickly reminded me that I need to listen to more Andrew Bird.

Then it was time for Rabbit in the Moon in the dance tent. Bunny came out in this crazy space suit and scared half the crowd.

He had a DJ playing behind him. Nice shot, eh?

After a costume change, he came out with a scary TV-on-a-stick that played images of eyes or of the crowd. He kept saying “LOOK INTO THE EYE!”

Where’s my pep-pep? There he is!

Then they brought out this Sri-Lankan goddess to do a dance for every one. I couldn’t get over how close I got.

Possibly my favorite shots of the whole weekend.

“Hi Brother and Sister Watkins? This is Tyler Jacobs from the ward. I’m sorry Billy couldn’t come to church this Sunday. This is what we were doing instead.” um…… yeah.

Bunny came out in an inflatable bubble and a stringy suit.

Of course, he walked over the crowd in it.

I think he was saying something scary here.

I left Billy in the tent with Rabbit in the Moon so I could catch She & Him. I missed the disco-ball suit with the rainbow glasses and the metal mask that shot out sparks. Pretty cool. Musically, I wasn’t too into them, but their stage show was unbelievable. Here’s something I saw on the way over to the South Stage.

Singer / Actress Zooey Deschanel of She & Him was super cute. Marylynn loves this band and was sad to miss them. She plays the CD so much Cricket can sing “Sweet Darlin’”. It’s cute. I gotta get that on video.

I was so sad because most of the crowd was full of nuckleheads and jerk faces who were just claiming a spot for Lil’ Wayne who was up next. They weren’t very nice or respectful to Zooey. It hurt my feelings so I left and got some lunch.

I stopped by the dance tent to snap a picture of Deadmau5.

The inexplicably popular Lil’ Wayne started 40 minutes late and hand a HUGE crowd.

I found him to be awful, sloppy, vulgar, offensive and lame. A lot of people said he stole the show. Not from me. I could only handle about 30 seconds.
More dancing in the dance tent. I can’t remember who was DJ’ing right here, but this gives you an idea of the energy there.

Billy and I worked our way right up to the front of the crowd for Iggy and the Stooges! The legendary Mike Watt was on bass. I’m ashamed to admit that I only knew one of their songs they played, but it was still a total blast.

Iggy went nuts (as is expected) and the crowd swelled forward. I got pushed right up to the front and got some amazing pictures.

On the Coachella Movie, someone says that Iggy looks like a of chewed-up piece or rusty wire. Very accurate description I must say.

Afterwords we headed back to the South Stage and caught a song or two by the Black Keys. These are the Black Keys.

This was a TeePee in the employee VIP lounge area. This was a great spot to hang out and chill. Saturday they served us free ice cream bars!

This bartender fell in love with Billy and kept calling him “Glasses Boy” all weekend. She was disappointed that he was underage and didn’t drink, but she did hook him up with some free orange juice at one point.

Bob Dylan played to a very enthusiastic crowd. He was boring.

Here’s Bob contemplating a giant zombie hand that appeared on stage. I think it was trying to steal his OscarĀ®. That part was kinda cool

I sat on the grass and chilled behind this old couple for a while. Way cute.

Once we were a little rested, we headed back to the Dance Tent to catch Moby playing a DJ set.

He was really awesome and played a lot of hard house beats. No mellow stuff like his records.

Then he stood on the table and led the crowd in some Yoga stretches.

I’m not a fan of Nine Inch Nails, but they were headlining, so we had to go catch a few of their songs.

While we were watching the show, this drunk chick turns around and IMMEDATELY starts dancing with Billy and freaking him in inappropriate ways. He just kinda chuckled in bemused terror. She jumped on him and her boyfriends (?) took pictures of them. Totally bizarre.

Nine Inch Nails were playing a song that was actually rather negative here.

Drunk Chick kept dancing with Billy. He humored her for a little bit until she turned and started to freak a man in front of her. The man turned around and was a butch lesbian who was not as amused by her antics as we were. In the commotion, we made a break for it.

This was the only shot i got of Kanye West before my camera died. We watched almost the entire set. Kudos to Billy who patiently stood by while I danced and sang along. Kanye talked a lot about himself. weird, huh?
After the show, Billy and I decided to just drive home so he could make it back to work at 9 the next morning. We plowed through the night and I got home around 3am.
All in all, it was an awesome show and a great time. There were a few rough patches, but it went as well as it could have. I don’t get out to shows much these days, so this was quite a treat. Thanks Marylynn for letting me go. I’m anxiously looking forward to next year already! Good night and thanks for reading this far.
